Battery Storage, Hybrid and Off Grid

Hybrid Systems - Solar PV & Batteries

A Hybrid – Battery Storage Solar system works much the same way as a normal Grid Connect solar system however there are a few extra components and batteries required. It may also sound similar to an Off-Grid system; however the Hybrid – Battery Storage solar system will never be disconnected from the grid so you’ll get the best of both worlds.

Just like an off-grid system, you draw the power from the sun during the day and the excess power you produce will charge your batteries. But like a Grid Connect Solar system, any excess power produced during the day after your premises’ consumption is catered for and the batteries are full, is sent back to the grid at the rate of your current feed-in-tariff agreed with your retailer.

When the solar panel finish producing after the sun goes down (or you have a power outage) your home or business will continue to be powered from the batteries. This is where the benefit of a Hybrid Battery Storage solar system comes in to play; if your home or business uses more electricity than the amount that your batteries hold, you will begin to draw electricity from the grid until your solar system begins to produce electricity again (except during a prolonged power outage). This means you will always have a reliable supply of electricity as well as cutting down your electricity costs.

With the ever rising cost of power, maximising your usage of excess solar power and reducing your reliance on the mains power grid has become a priority for many people, particularly following the devastation caused by the bushfires recently.

Other than reliability of supply people are choosing Hybrid with battery storage for:

Offsetting Peak loads by using your own production from storage during peak tariff periods.

Off Grid Systems - Solar PV, Batteries & Back-Up Generator

An Off Grid system is exactly as it sounds, Off-Grid. By utilising an off grid system it means that you have no connection or dependence on an external supply to provide energy to your home or business. Done right, off-grid systems can provide energy autonomy for your home or business with very little ongoing costs whatsoever (maintenance costs only).

Just like a hybrid system, your home or business draws the power from the solar panels and sun during the day and the excess power you produce then goes to charge your batteries. But unlike a Grid Connect Solar system, the system has to be very carefully engineered and sized according to your energy needs.

Off Grid systems can be very complex to get right and we would highly recommend only using qualified and experienced companies to provide your system. For a consultation with one of our experts, book your free consultation today!!

What is a solar battery and what does it do?

In simple terms a solar battery is an energy storage device that is used in collaboration with a solar PV system. Solar batteries can help you make the most of your solar PV system and decrease your dependence on the DNSP network (Grid).

Solar batteries store excess, unused energy that is being produced by your solar PV system during the hours of daylight and have it ready for use at night, during adverse weather (i.e. clouds), or during a power outage.

Storing your self-generated solar energy means you can power your home with clean, green electricity around the clock. In addition you are protecting your home or business from ever rising electricity costs from retailers, as well as having the possibility to maintain supply power during a power outage and of course, doing your part to protect the environment from CO2 and climate change.

How much do solar batteries cost?

Solar battery storage systems can start from as little as just a couple of thousand dollars, depending on your system setup, battery capacity, as well as retailer and manufacturer.

When looking at installing battery storage in your home, it’s worth ensuring that you have done your research and have selected a reputable and knowledgeable organisation. There are many different types of battery storage solution on the market currently in Australia and selecting the right one can be very confusing.

The price point of batteries vary greatly from one type of technology to the next, and the cheapest option is not always the best or most suitable for your needs.

At Concept, our experienced team will ensure that we guide you towards the best and most cost effective solution tailored to suit your needs.

What is the life expectancy of a battery?

Most solar batteries are warranted for at least 10 years, but have expected lifespans exceeding that.

Just like any electrical or mechanical component there are many factors that can effect the lifecycle of a solar battery, these include:

- The type of technology that the solar battery is made from

- The usage (how many charge cycles your battery is put through and how deep those cycles are will affect its lifespan)

- Ambient Temperature (most batteries have parameters in which the battery must be kept within)

- How well they are maintained (monitoring and maintaining your battery to ensure optimal health at all times is key)

Is solar battery storage worth it?

Whether a solar battery is a worthwhile, beneficial addition to your solar system depends on a number of considerations. The driver behind your decision to opt for a solar battery can also have an impact on its worth.

In areas where energy power outages are common-place, a solar PV system combined with a battery storage system that is capable of delivering back up power could be worth it’s weight in gold. In areas where energy rates are exceptionally high during peak times, a solar PV and battery storage solution could be a great financial investment and for those wishing to reduce their reliance on coal power in an attempt to help to save the planet, a battery system could be a great option. Each case is different and at Concept we treat each system as unique, we tailor our offerings to suit your needs and will never take a generic one shoe fits all approach to battery storage.

Use your locally generated solar power instead of energy from the grid

Reduce your carbon footprint by using more renewable energy

Have back in power during power outages

Save money by reducing your peak demand from the grid

Protect yourself from rising electricity costs and ensure that your energy costs remain constant

Capital Costs can be significant

Selecting the right system and battery solution for your home or business can be confusing

Adding a battery to your solar system could affect your eligibility for existing solar feed-in tariffs

Although the initial capital investment and time to pay off the investment can be high at first, the long-term benefits of solar production and self-reliance generates ongoing savings and protection from rising power costs, making batteries a smart, long-term investment that’s well worth the upfront cost when done right.
